Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man broke his fast in Ramadan. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him to free a slave, or to fast for two months, or to feed sixty needy people. He said: I am not able to do any of these. A basket of dates was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Take it and give it as charity. He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I do not find anyone more in need of it than myself. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled until his molar teeth became visible. He said: Then eat it yourself. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): In this narration, apart from Imam Malik and Ibn Jurayj, no other narrator from al-Zuhri has transmitted these words: "or he should fast for two months, or feed sixty needy people." The statement of this man that I have broken my fast means: I had intercourse (during the fast).
