Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever is in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) at the time of true dawn, his fast is not valid. (The narrator says) My father and I set out and we presented ourselves before Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who are the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We asked both of them about this matter, so both of them informed us that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes be in a state of major ritual impurity at the time of true dawn, but it was not due to a wet dream, then he would fast. (The narrator says) Then we went to Marwan bin Hakam and informed him about the statements of both women and the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), so Marwan said: I urge both of you to go to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and inform him about this matter. (The narrator says) Then we met Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). He was at the door of the mosque at that time. We said to him: The governor has instructed us to mention this matter before you. He asked: What is it? So my father narrated the whole incident to him, upon which the color of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah’s (may Allah be pleased with him) face changed and he said: Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated the hadith to me in this way. In any case, they would know better. Imam Zuhri narrates: They had misunderstood the meaning of the hadith.
