Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It was the practice of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when any of them fasted and the time for breaking the fast arrived, if he slept before breaking his fast, then he could not eat anything that night and until the next evening. Once, Sayyiduna Qais bin Sirmah (may Allah be pleased with him) was fasting. When the time for breaking the fast approached, he came to his wife and asked: “Do you have anything to eat?” She replied: “No, but I will bring something.” She went to get food for him. He had been working that day, and he fell asleep. When his wife returned, she said: “Alas for you!” The next day at noon, he fainted. This matter was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so this verse was revealed: “It has been made lawful for you to have relations with your wives on the nights of fasting.” Upon this, the people were very happy. Then Allah Almighty revealed: “And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread at dawn.”
