Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When any of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had been fasting and the time for breaking the fast approached, if he slept before breaking his fast, then he could not eat anything for the entire night, nor until the next evening. Once, Sayyiduna Qais bin Sirmah (may Allah be pleased with him) was fasting. When the time for breaking the fast approached, he came to his wife and asked: “Do you have anything to eat?” She replied: “No, but I will go and look for something.” He had been working that day, and he fell asleep. When his wife came to him and saw him in that state, she said: “Woe to you!” The next day, around noon, he fainted. This matter was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so this verse was revealed: “It has been made lawful for you to be intimate with your wives during the nights of fasting (i.e., Ramadan). They are a garment for you...” So the people were very happy with this. (The command of Allah, the Exalted, is:) “Eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of dawn.”
