Hadith 337

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَحْطَبَةَ بِفَمِ الصِّلْحِ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَبِيبِ بْنِ عَرَبِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، أَنَّ سُرَاقَةَ بْنَ جُعْشُمٍ ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنَا عَنْ أَمْرِنَا كَأَنَّا نَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ ، أَبِمَا جَرَتْ بِهِ الأَقْلامُ وَثَبَتَتْ بِهِ الْمَقَادِيرُ ، أَوْ بِمَا يُسْتَأْنَفُ ؟ قَالَ : " لا ، بَلْ بِمَا جَرَتْ بِهِ الأَقْلامُ وَثَبَتَتْ بِهِ الْمَقَادِيرُ " ، قَالَ : فَفِيمَ الْعَمَلُ إِذًا ؟ قَالَ : " اعْمَلُوا فَكُلٌّ مُيَسَّرٌ " قَالَ سُرَاقَةُ : فَلا أَكُونُ أَبَدًا أَشَدَّ اجْتِهَادًا فِي الْعَمَلِ مِنِّي الآنَ .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Ju'sham submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about the situation which we examine. Have the pens already written about it and has destiny been decided? Or is it something that happens anew? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! Rather, the pens have already written about it and destiny has been decided. He submitted: Then why should one act? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You should act, for ease has been made for every person. Sayyiduna Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: After today, I will always strive my utmost regarding actions.
