Saeed bin Amr narrates from his father, who reports from his grandfather: Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) went out with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to participate in a battle. While he was away, his mother passed away in Madinah Munawwarah. She was asked: “Do you have any bequest to make?” She replied: “What should I bequeath? All the wealth belongs to Sa’d.” Then she passed away before Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) returned. When Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) came back, this matter was mentioned to him. So Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! If I give charity on her behalf, will it benefit her?” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yes.” So Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Such-and-such garden is charity on her behalf.” He also mentioned the name of the garden.
