Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: At the beginning of revelation, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) began to see true dreams, which he would see while asleep. Whatever dream he saw would come true just as the break of dawn. Then, his nature was inclined towards seclusion. He would go to the Cave of Hira and there he would engage in worship.

(The narrator says) That is, he would worship there for several nights.

(Lady Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, narrates:) The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would take provisions with him, then return to Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). She would prepare similar provisions for him again. This continued until suddenly, one day, the Truth came to him. He was in the Cave of Hira at that time. There, an angel came to him and said: "Read." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I replied, "I do not read." The Prophet said: He seized me and squeezed me until I was distressed.

Then he released me and again said: "Read." I said: "I do not read." He seized me again and squeezed me a second time until I was distressed, then released me and said: "Read!" I said: "I do not read." Then he seized me and squeezed me a third time until I was distressed. Then he released me and said:

"Read in the name of your Lord who created."

These verses are up to:

"That which he did not know."

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) (or the narrator says) then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), and his body was trembling. He came to Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "Cover me with something!" She covered him with something until his condition subsided. Then he said: "O Khadijah! What has happened to me?" Then he told her the whole story. He said: "I fear for myself." Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Never! Glad tidings for you, by Allah! Allah will never disgrace you. Indeed, you maintain family ties, speak the truth, bear burdens, are hospitable to guests, and help in works of truth."

Then Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) took the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to Waraqah bin Nawfal, who was her uncle. He had become a Christian during the time of ignorance and used to write in Arabic. He had written some part of the Gospel in Arabic.

He was a very old man who had become blind. Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: "O my uncle! Listen to your nephew's words." Waraqah said: "O my nephew! What have you seen?" So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) told him what he had seen. Waraqah said: "This is the Namus (the angel) who was sent down to Moses (peace be upon him).

Oh, how I wish I were present at that time, or alive when your people drive you out (of Makkah)."

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Will they drive me out?" Waraqah replied: "Yes.

No one has ever brought anything like what you have brought except that he was opposed and harmed.

If I live to see that day, I will support you with all my might." (The narrator says) After some time, Waraqah passed away.

Then the revelation ceased for a while, until the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) became saddened. His grief became so intense that he went several times with the intention of throwing himself from the mountain.

Whenever he intended to throw himself from the mountain top, Jibreel (peace be upon him) would appear before him and say: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! You are truly the Messenger of Allah." Because of this, his anxiety would subside and his soul would be at peace.

And he would return. When the cessation of revelation prolonged, he once again went in the same manner. When he reached the mountain top, Jibreel (peace be upon him) appeared before him and said the same thing to him.
