Ibn Hibban

Ahnaf bin Qais narrates: I came to Madinah Munawwarah and was sitting in a gathering in which some individuals from the Quraysh were also present. During this, a man arrived who was wearing coarse clothes, his body was also coarse, and his face was coarse as well. He came and stood near those people and said: Give the collectors of treasures the news of burning coals, which are being kindled for them in the fire of Hell, and then one of those coals will be placed on the chest of one of them until it comes out from his shoulder, and it will be placed on his shoulder until it comes out from his chest. The people lowered their heads; I did not see anyone who replied to him. Then that man left, and I followed him. He went and sat near a pillar. I said: I have seen that all those people disliked what you said to them. That man said: These people have no understanding. My beloved friend, Sayyiduna Abu al-Qasim (ﷺ), called me and said: O Abu Dharr! I said: I am present. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Have you seen Uhud? Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I considered how intense the sunlight was, thinking perhaps the Prophet (ﷺ) wanted to send me for some task. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: I do not like that I should have gold equal to (the mountain of) Uhud and I spend all of it except for three dinars (i.e., I would spend even that). (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) These people are gathering the world, they have no understanding of anything. The narrator says: I asked: What is your connection with your Qurayshi brothers? He replied: No, by your Lord! I will not ask these people for anything of the world, nor will I ask them about any matter of my religion, until I present myself before Allah Almighty and His Messenger (ﷺ).
