Qais bin Abu Hazim reports: We went to visit Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill, and he told us: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: Whatever a person spends, he will be rewarded for it except for what is in this earth (i.e., what is spent on constructions and the like). (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): The meaning of this narration is: When a person spends something on the earth which is beyond his basic needs, he will not be rewarded for it.
