Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) for something, and he gave it to me. Then I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again, and he gave it to me again. I asked him again, and he gave it to me again. I asked him once more, and he gave it to me again. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hakim bin Hizam, this wealth is sweet and lush. Whoever acquires it with generosity of temperament, there is blessing in it for him. And whoever acquires it with greed, there is no blessing in it for him, and he is like the one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand." Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! By the One Who sent you with the truth, after you, I will never ask anyone for anything until I die." The narrators 'Urwah and Sa'id state: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) (during his caliphate) called Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) and wanted to give him something, but he refused to take it. Then Sayyiduna 'Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) (during his caliphate) wanted to give him something, but he refused that as well. So Sayyiduna 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I make you all witnesses among the group of Muslims regarding Hakim bin Hizam that I have presented his right before him, which is his share from the spoils of war, but he refused to take it." The narrator states: After the (apparent) passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) never asked anyone for anything until he died.
