Ibn Jurayj narrates: I asked Ata: Did you hear Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that you people have been commanded to perform Tawaf (circumambulation) of the Ka'bah, you have not been commanded to enter it? Ata replied: Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not prohibit entering it, however, I heard him narrate that he said: Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed me that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the Ka'bah, he supplicated in all its corners, but he did not perform prayer inside it, until he came out and performed prayer near the door of the Ka'bah and said: The Qiblah is this direction, so face it and perform prayer. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): Our Imams have interpreted these two narrations that the statements mentioned in both should be understood as negation and affirmation. These scholars have stated that Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) affirmed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayer inside the Ka'bah, and Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) negated it, so the command to affirm something overrides the one who negates it. And in the incident of Uhud, it is incumbent upon us that Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) negated the performance of funeral prayer and washing of the martyrs on that day, and in my view, it is more appropriate that a distinction be made between the two narrations, that the actions mentioned in both be attributed to two different situations, and it be said that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah and entered the Ka'bah, he performed prayer in it, as the students of Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) have narrated from Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both), and this was on the day of the conquest of Makkah, as mentioned by Hassan bin Atiyyah from Nafi' from Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Whereas the negation by Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing prayer should be attributed to the situation where he says that Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed him about this, while Abu Sha'tha has narrated from Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayer inside the Ka'bah, and he says that Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed him about this. So when this narration is attributed to the situation we have mentioned, which refers to two different occasions, then the contradiction between them will be resolved, and each can be attributed to its specific situation.
