Awn bin Abu Juhaifah narrates from his father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him). One day, Sayyiduna Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), and saw Sayyida Umm Darda (may Allah be pleased with her) in a disheveled state, so he asked: What has happened to you? She replied: Your brother has no need for the world. When Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, he welcomed Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) and placed food before him. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Eat. Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I am fasting. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I swear that you must eat, for I will not eat until you eat. The narrator states that Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) then ate with him. Then he stayed with him that night. When night came, Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) got up to perform voluntary prayers, but Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) stopped him. He said: O Abu Darda! Your Lord has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your body has a right over you. Give each one who has a right their due. Fast sometimes and leave it sometimes. Pray voluntary prayers and also sleep. And go to your wife as well. When the time of true dawn approached, Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Now get up. Then both of them got up, performed voluntary prayers, and went to perform the obligatory prayer. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had performed the prayer, Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and informed him about what Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) then said to him the same thing that Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) had said.
