أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنَّ سَلَمَةَ بْنَ الأَكْوَعِ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ قَاتَلَ أَخِي قِتَالا شَدِيدًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَارْتَدَّ عَلَيْهِ سَيْفُهُ فَقَتَلَهُ ، فَقَالَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي ذَلِكَ : رَجُلٌ مَاتَ بِسِلاحِهِ وَشَكُّوا فِي بَعْضِ أَمْرِهِ ، قَالَ سَلَمَةُ : فَقَفَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ خَيْبَرَ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، ائْذَنْ لِي أَنْ أَرْجُزَ بِكَ ، فَأَذِنَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ : أَعْلَمُ مَا تَقُولُ : وَاللَّهِ لَوْلا اللَّهُ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا وَلا تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلا صَلَّيْنَا فَأَنْزِلَنْ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا وَثَبِّتِ الأَقْدَامَ إِنْ لاقَيْنَا وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ قَدْ بَغَوْا عَلَيْنَا فَلَمَّا قَضَيْتُ رَجَزِي ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ قَالَ هَذَا ؟ " قُلْتُ : أَخِي ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ " ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ نَاسًا أَبَوْا الصَّلاةَ عَلَيْهِ ، يَقُولُونَ : رَجُلٌ مَاتَ بِسِلاحِهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " رَجُلٌ مَاتَ جَاهِدًا مُجَاهِدًا " .
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar, my brother fought fiercely alongside the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). His sword turned back on him and struck him, and he was martyred. Regarding him, the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Since this person died by his own weapon, people became doubtful about his case. Sayyiduna Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was returning from Khaybar, I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Allow me to recite rajaz (poetry) before you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave me permission, so Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Be mindful of what you recite. (So I began reciting:) “By Allah! If it were not for Allah, we would not have been guided, nor would we have given charity, nor would we have prayed. (O Allah), send down tranquility upon us, and if we face the enemy, make us steadfast. The polytheists have confronted us.” When I completed my rajaz, the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Who composed these verses? I replied: My brother did. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: May Allah have mercy on him. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Some people did not perform his funeral prayer; they say: This person died by his own weapon. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He is a person who died as a mujahid while striving in jihad.
