Bashir bin Nahik narrates: Sayyiduna Bashir bin Khasasiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me. His name in the time of ignorance was Zahm bin Ma’bad. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him: What is your name? He replied: Zahm. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You are Bashir. So this became his name. He narrates: Once I was walking with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said: O son of Khasasiyyah! Have you entered the morning in a state where you have any displeasure with Allah? I replied: I have not entered the morning in a state where I have any displeasure with Allah. Allah has granted me every kind of goodness. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to the graves of some polytheists, and he said: These people have gone far ahead of much goodness. He said this three times. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to the graves of the Muslims and said: They have attained much goodness. He said this three times. Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept walking, and his gaze fell upon a man who was walking among the graves wearing shoes. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called out to him in a loud voice: O man with the shoes! Take off your shoes. The man looked, and when he recognized the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he took off his shoes and put them aside. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): It is possible that those shoes were made from the skin of a dead animal that had not been tanned. That is why the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) disliked wearing the skin of a dead animal. And the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “He hears the sound of their shoes when they leave him and return,” contains evidence that entering the graveyard wearing shoes is permissible.
