Ibn Abi Mulaika narrates: I participated in the funeral of Sayyiduna Uthman's son Aban. There, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) arrived and sat down. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) arrived and sat down. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Do you not stop them from crying? I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, the deceased is punished because of the crying of his family over him." So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied to him: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also used to say such a thing. (Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, narrated:) We set out with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When we reached the place of Baida, there was a rider under the shade of a tree. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), go and see who this rider is. I went there, and it was Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him). His wife was also with him. She said to me: Call Suhaib to me. Then he joined them, until they reached Madinah Munawwarah. There, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded, so Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Alas, my brother! Alas, my companion! So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Suhaib, do not cry, for I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The deceased is punished because of the crying of his family over him. Then this matter was mentioned to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), so she said: By Allah! You are not narrating from liars or those who have been rejected, but for you, the evidence that is in the Qur'an is sufficient, and regarding this, (the command of Allah, the Exalted, is:) "No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah increases the punishment of the disbeliever because of the crying of his family over him."
