Hadith 305

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذْ بْنِ مُعَاذْ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ رَضِيَ الِلَّهِ عَنْهُ ، أن النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ وَتَضَعُونَهَا عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا وَضَعَهَا الِلَّهِ : يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ سورة المائدة آية 105 ْ ، إِنَّ النَّاسَ رَأَوُا الْمُنْكَرَ فَلَمْ يُغَيِّرُوهُ ، يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ الِلَّهِ بِعِقَابٍ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "O people! You recite this verse and take from it a meaning different from what Allah intends." The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: "O people, it is obligatory upon you to take care of yourselves; when you have obtained guidance, the one who goes astray cannot harm you." (The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, says:) When people see evil (i.e., sin) and do not try to stop it, soon Allah, the Exalted, will send punishment upon all of them.
