باب الصدق والأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر - ذكر ما يستحب للمرء استعمال الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر لعوام الناس دون الأمراء الذين لا يأمن على نفسه منهم إن فعل ذلك-Chapter on Truthfulness and Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil – Advising ordinary people to enjoin good and forbid evil, but caution with rulers if one fears harm.

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيَمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَثَلُ الْمُدَاهِنِ فِي حُدُودِ اللَّهِ ، وَالآمِرِ بِهَا ، وَالنَّاهِيَ عَنْهَا ، كَمَثَلِ قَوْمٍ ، اسْتَهُمْوا ، سَفِينَةً مِنْ سُفُنِ الْبَحْرِ ، فَصَارَ بَعْضُهُمْ فِي مُؤَخَّرِ السَّفِينَةِ ، وَأَبَعْدَهُمْ مِنَ الْمِرْفَقِ ، وَبَعْضُهُمْ فِي أَعْلَى السَّفِينَةِ ، فَكَانُوا أَرَادَوا الْمَاءَ وَهُمْ فِي آخِرِ السَّفِينَةِ ، آذَوْا رِحَالَهُمْ ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ : نَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ مِنَ الْمِرْفَقِ وَأَبَعْدَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ ، نَخْرِقَ دَفَّةَ السَّفِينَةِ وَنَسْتَقِي ، فَاسْتَغْنَيْنَا عَنْهُ سَدَّدَنَاهُ ، فَقَالَ السُّفَهَاءُ مِنْهُمْ : افْعَلُوا ، قَالَ : فَأَخَذَ الْفَأْسَ فَضَرَبَ عَرَضَ السَّفِينَةِ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ رُشَيْدٌ : مَا تَصْنَعُ ؟ قَالَ : نَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ مِنَ الْمِرْفَقِ وَأَبَعْدَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ ، نَكْسِرُ دَفَ السَّفِينَةِ ، فَنَسْتَقِي ، فَاسْتَغْنَيْنَا عَنْهُ سَدَّدَنَاهُ ، فَقَالَ : لا تَفْعَلْ ، فَإِنَّكَ تَهْلِكُ وَنَهْلِكُ " .
Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) say: “The example of the one who violates the limits set by Allah and the one who enforces them and prevents their violation is like a group of people who drew lots for places on a boat at sea. Some of them got the lower part of the boat. Those people were farther from convenience, and some went to the upper part. When those in the lower part wanted to get water, they had to pass by those above, causing them inconvenience. So one of them said: We are closer to convenience and farther from water. Let us break a part of the boat and get water directly. When our need is fulfilled, we will close it up again. Among them, some foolish people said: Go ahead and do it. So one of them took an axe and struck the floor of the boat. Then one wise person among them said: What are you doing? He replied: We are closer to convenience and farther from water, so we are breaking the floor of the boat to get water. When our need is fulfilled, we will close it up again. The wise person said: Do not do this, for if you do, you will be destroyed and we will also be destroyed.”
