Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Prophet of Allah, Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him), remained afflicted with illness for eighteen years. Every close and distant person abandoned him, except for two men who were his very close friends. They used to visit him morning and evening. One of them said to his companion, "Do you know this? By Allah! Ayyub has committed such a sin that no one among all the worlds has committed." His companion said to him, "What is it?" He replied, "It has been eighteen years, and Allah Almighty has not shown mercy to him; otherwise, Allah would have removed his affliction." When that person went to Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him), he could not remain patient and mentioned this in front of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him). So Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) said, "I do not know what you are saying, but this much is true: Allah Almighty knows that I passed by two men who were arguing with each other and both were mentioning Allah Almighty. I returned home and offered expiation on behalf of both of them, disliking that Allah Almighty's name be mentioned unjustly." The narrator says, then he went to relieve himself, and when he had finished his need, his wife held his hand. Then one day, she did not come to him, so Allah Almighty revealed to Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) at that place: "Strike your foot; here is cool water to wash and drink." The woman came to him after some delay, and when Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) turned to her, his illness had ended and he was as beautiful (and healthy) as before. When the woman saw him, she said, "O (sir)! May Allah Almighty bless you, have you seen the Prophet of Allah (Sayyiduna Ayyub, peace be upon him) who was afflicted with illness? By Allah, I have not seen anyone more resembling him than you, that is, when he was healthy." Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) said, "I am he." Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) had two storehouses, one for wheat and the other for barley. Allah Almighty sent two clouds; one came over the wheat storehouse and rained gold upon it until it was filled (with gold), and the other cloud rained silver upon the barley storehouse until it was filled (with silver), meaning Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) became wealthy again.
