Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was delivering the Friday sermon when some people stood before him and said in a loud voice: O Messenger of Allah! There is a drought, the trees have turned black, and the animals are perishing. Please supplicate to Allah for us, that He may send down rain upon us. So the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed: O Allah! Send down rain upon us. The narrator says: By Allah! We could not see even a patch of cloud in the sky. The narrator says: At that moment, a patch appeared and it began to spread, then it started to rain. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) descended from the pulpit, performed the prayer, and after completing the prayer, it continued to rain until the next Friday. Then, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stood to deliver the sermon, the people called out loudly: O Messenger of Allah! The houses are collapsing, and travel has become impossible. Please supplicate to Allah for us, that He may withhold the rain from us. The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) smiled and then said: O Allah! Around us, not upon us. The narrator says: The clouds cleared from over Madinah, and it continued to rain around Madinah, but not a single drop fell upon Madinah. The narrator says: I saw Madinah, and it was like a crown (i.e., the clouds had cleared from it).
