Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: During the sacred time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up to perform prayer. He stood for a very long time, then he went into bowing (ruku‘) and performed a very long bowing. Then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but it was shorter than the first standing. Then he bowed again and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the first bowing. Then he raised his head, then he bent down to go into prostration (sajdah) and performed prostration. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up for the second rak‘ah and performed a long standing, but it was shorter than the previous standing. Then he went into bowing and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the previous bowing. Then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but it was shorter than the previous standing. Then he went into bowing and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the previous bowing. Then he raised his head and bent down for prostration, then he performed prostration. Then, after finishing the prayer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “O people! Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone. When you see them (in the state of eclipse), perform prayer, give charity, and acknowledge the greatness of Allah. O Ummah of Muhammad! No one gets as angry as Allah does when His servant commits adultery or when His maidservant commits adultery. O Ummah of Muhammad! If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.”
