Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. This happened on the day when Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him), that is, the son of the Prophet (peace be upon him), passed away. People said: The solar eclipse occurred because of the death of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up and led the people in prayer with six bowings (ruku) and four prostrations (sajdah). Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said the takbir, then he recited (Qur'an), and the recitation was lengthy. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ruku, which was as long as his standing. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his head and began recitation again, but this recitation was shorter than the first one. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ruku, which was as long as this (second) recitation. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his head, then recited again, which was somewhat shorter than the second recitation. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed a ruku almost as long as that. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his head, then performed two prostrations. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up and performed a prayer in which there were three bowings before going into prostration, and each ruku was shorter than the previous one, but the ruku was as long as the standing. Then during the prayer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) moved backward, and the rows of people with him also moved backward. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) moved forward, and the rows of people with him also moved forward. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) completed the prayer, the sun had become bright again. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death of any human being. When you see any of these, then perform prayer until the eclipse is over."
