Abdur Rahman bin Numair narrates: He asked Zuhri about the method of the eclipse prayer. So he informed, Urwah bin Zubair narrated to me from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: The sun was eclipsed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered a man, and he announced that congregational prayer was about to be held. People gathered, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led them in prayer. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer, and recited a long recitation. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer and performed a long bowing (ruku‘), which was as long as his standing or perhaps a little longer. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his head, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said «سمع اللہ لمن حمدہ». Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited a long recitation, but it was a little shorter than the first standing. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the first bowing. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his head and said «سمع اللہ لمن حمدہ». Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer and went into prostration. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed long prostrations, but they were a little shorter than the bowings, or perhaps a little longer. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer and raised his head. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer and went into prostration. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer and stood up. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited and recited a long recitation, but it was shorter than the first recitation. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the previous bowing. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his head and recited «سمع اللہ لمن حمدہ». Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited a long recitation, but it was a little shorter than the first recitation of the second standing. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the previous bowing. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer, then raised his head and recited «سمع اللہ لمن حمدہ». Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his head. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the takbeer, then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed prostration, but it was shorter than the previous prostrations. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his head. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited the tashahhud, then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said the salam. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood among the people and praised and glorified Allah. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone, but they are two signs among the signs of Allah. If either of them is eclipsed, then turn to the remembrance of Allah and prayer." Zuhri says: I said to Urwah: By Allah! Your brother, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), did not do so when he was in Madinah and the sun was eclipsed; he only performed two rak‘ahs like the morning prayer. So Urwah said: Yes, he did so, but he acted contrary to the Sunnah.
