أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يُصَلِّي حَتَّى لَمْ يَكَدْ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ ، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ حَتَّى لَمْ يَكَدْ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ، فَجَعَلَ يَتَضَرَّعُ ، وَيَبْكِي ، وَيَقُولُ : " رَبِّ أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ ، أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَنَحْنُ نَسْتَغْفِرُكَ " ، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ انْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ ، فَقَامَ ، فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ، وَقَالَ " إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَيْنِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِذَا انْكَسَفَا ، فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ " . ثُمَّ قَالَ : " لَقَدْ عُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ شِئْتُ لَتَعَاطَيْتُ قِطْفًا مِنْ قُطُوفِهَا ، وَعُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ النَّارُ ، حَتَّى جَعَلْتُ أَتَّقِيهَا حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ تَغْشَاكُمْ ، فَجَعَلْتُ أَقُولُ : أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ ، رَبِّ أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرِونَكَ " ، قَالَ : " فَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا الْحَمَيرِيَةَ السَّوْدَاءَ صَاحِبَةَ الْهِرَّةِ كَانَتْ حَبَسَتْهَا ، فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَسْقِهَا ، وَلَمْ تَتْرُكْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الأَرْضِ ، فَرَأَيْتُهَا كُلَّمَا أَدْبَرَتْ نُهِشَتْ فِي النَّارِ ، وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَ بَدَنَتَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَخَا دَعْدَعٍ ، يُدْفَعُ فِي النَّارِ بِقَضِيبَيْنِ ذِي شُعْبَتَيْنِ ، وَرَأَيْتُ صَاحِبَ الْمِحْجَنِ ، فَرَأَيْتُهُ فِي النَّارِ عَلَى مِحْجَنِهِ مُتَوَكِّئًا " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up to perform prayer; it seemed as if he would never go into bowing (ruku‘), then he went into ruku‘, and it seemed as if he would never raise his head, then he raised his head and began to weep and cry, and he was saying: “O my Lord, did You not promise me that You would not punish them as long as I am among them? Did You not promise me that You would not punish them as long as we seek forgiveness from You?” When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) completed the prayer, the sun became bright again. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up, praised and glorified Allah, and said: “Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. When these two are eclipsed, then turn towards the remembrance of Allah.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Paradise was presented before me, so much so that if I wished, I could have taken a bunch from it. And Hell was presented before me, so much so that I tried to avoid it, fearing that it might engulf you. So I began to say: Did You not promise me that You would not punish them as long as I am among them? O my Lord! Did You not promise me that You would not punish them as long as we seek forgiveness from You?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I saw in it a black woman from Himyar who was the owner of a cat. She had tied up the cat and did not give it anything to eat or drink, nor did she let it go so that it could eat on its own. I saw that whenever she came, her face was scratched. I also saw in Hell a man from the tribe of Da‘d‘a‘ who was the caretaker of the Prophet’s sacrificial animals; he was being thrown into Hell with two sticks having two ends. I also saw a man with a staff; I saw him in Hell, leaning on his staff.
