Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were sitting with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when a solar eclipse occurred. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up in anxiety, dragging his cloak, and entered the mosque. He performed two units of prayer. While he was still praying, the eclipse ended. This eclipse occurred at the time of the death of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) son, Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him), so some people said: The eclipse happened because of Ibrahim’s death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O people! Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone’s death. When you see them (in the state of eclipse), supplicate until the eclipse is over.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), “Supplicate,” means that you should perform prayer, because sometimes the Arabs use the word supplication for prayer.
