Tawoos Yamani narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): People say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You should perform ghusl (ritual bath) on the day of Jumu'ah and wash your head, except if you are in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity), and you should also apply perfume." So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: As for perfume, I do not know about it; as for ghusl, that is correct. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "except if you are in a state of janabah," contains evidence that performing ghusl of janabah on the day of Jumu'ah after the break of dawn is sufficient in place of the ghusl for Jumu'ah. In this, there is evidence that performing ghusl on the day of Jumu'ah is not obligatory, because if it were obligatory, then one of the two ghusls would not suffice in place of the other.
