Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed either the Zuhr or perhaps the Asr prayer, and after praying two rak‘ahs, he concluded the prayer with salam. Then Sayyiduna Dhush-Shimalayn bin ‘Abd ‘Amr, who was an ally of Banu Zuhrah, said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Has the prayer been shortened, or did you forget? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What is Dhul-Yadayn saying? The people replied: O Messenger of Allah! He is speaking the truth. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then led the people in the two rak‘ahs that had been left, and then he concluded with salam. Zuhri narrates: This incident occurred before Badr, because after that, matters became stable.
