أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَمَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ مَوْلَى أَبِي أَحْمَدَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْثًا ، وَهُمْ نَفَرٌ ، فَدَعَاهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " مَاذَا مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ؟ " فَاسْتَقْرَأَهُمْ ، حَتَّى مَرَّ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ ، هُوَ مِنْ أَحْدَثِهِمْ سِنًّا ، فَقَالَ : " مَاذَا مَعَكَ يَا فُلانُ ؟ " قَالَ : مَعِي كَذَا وَكَذَا ، وَسُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ ، قَالَ : " مَعَكَ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ ؟ " قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " اذْهَبْ فَأَنْتَ أَمِيرُهُمْ " ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ هُوَ أَشْرَفُهُمْ : وَالَّذِي كَذَا وَكَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا مَنَعَنِي أَنْ لا أَتَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ إِلا خَشْيَةَ أَنْ لا أَقُومَ بِهِ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " تَعَلَّمِ الْقُرْآنَ وَاقْرَأْهُ وَارْقُدْ ، فَإِنَّ مَثَلَ الْقُرْآنِ لِمَنْ تَعَلَّمَهُ فَقَرَأَهُ وَقَامَ بِهِ ، كَمَثَلِ جِرَابٍ مَحْشُوٍّ مِسْكًا تَفُوحُ رِيحُهُ كُلَّ مَكَانٍ ، وَمَنْ تَعَلَّمَهُ فَرَقَدَ وَهُوَ فِي جَوْفِهِ كَمَثَلِ جِرَابٍ وُكِئَ عَلَى مِسْكٍ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an expedition. They were some people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called them and asked: How much of the Qur'an do you know? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept asking them about their recitation until he passed by one among them who was the youngest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O so-and-so, how much of the Qur'an do you know? He replied: I know such-and-such surahs and also Surah Al-Baqarah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you know Surah Al-Baqarah? He replied: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You go, you are the leader of these people. Then a man among them who was highly respected said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! By the One in whom these qualities are found, I did not acquire the knowledge of the Qur'an except because I feared that I would not be able to recite it in voluntary prayers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You should acquire the knowledge of the Qur'an and also recite it, and you may also sleep. Whoever acquires the knowledge of the Qur'an and then recites it (in voluntary prayers), his example is like a musk-filled container whose mouth is open and its fragrance is spreading everywhere. And whoever acquires the knowledge of the Qur'an and then sleeps while the Qur'an is in his mind, his example is like a musk-filled container whose mouth is closed.
