Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It was said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Such-and-such a person spends the whole night in voluntary prayers, but when morning comes, he commits theft." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "That which he recites will soon prevent him from that deed." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "That which he recites will soon prevent him," are of the type about which we have written in our books that sometimes the Arabs attribute an action to the action itself just as they attribute it to the doer. So the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) intent is that when the prayer is genuine in its beginning and end, then the one who prays, along with his prayer, refrains from prohibited things. Its example is the saying of Allah Almighty: "Indeed, prayer prevents indecency and wrongdoing."
