أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ مُرَّةَ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " عَجِبَ رَبُّنَا مِنْ رَجُلَيْنِ : رَجُلٍ ثَارَ مِنْ وِطَائِهِ وَلِحَافِهِ مِنْ بَيْنِ حِبِّهِ وَأَهْلِهِ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ ، فَيَقُولُ اللَّهُ جَلَّ وَعَلا : انْظُرُوا إِلَى عَبْدِي ثَارَ مِنْ فِرَاشِهِ وَوِطَائِهِ مِنْ بَيْنَ حِبِّهِ وَأَهْلِهِ إِلَى صَلاتِهِ رَغْبَةً فِيمَا عِنْدِي ، وَشَفَقَةً مِمَّا عِنْدِي ، وَرَجُلٍ غَزَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَانْهَزَمَ النَّاسُ ، وَعَلِمَ مَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الانْهِزَامِ ، وَمَا لَهُ فِي الرُّجُوعِ ، فَرَجَعَ حَتَّى أُهْرِيقَ دَمُهُ ، فَيَقُولُ اللَّهُ لِمَلائِكَتِهِ : انْظُرُوا إِلَى عَبْدِي ، رَجَعَ رَجَاءً فِيمَا عِنْدِي ، وَشَفَقَةً مِمَّا عِنْدِي حَتَّى أُهْرِيقَ دَمُهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Our Lord is pleased with two servants: one is the person who (at night) gets up from his bed and blanket, from beside his wife, and goes towards prayer. Allah Almighty says: Look at My servant, he has gotten up from his bed and blanket, from beside his wife, and come towards prayer, desiring what is with Me and fearing what is with Me. The second person is the one who participates in jihad in the way of Allah. People retreat, but this person also knows what calamity will befall him if he retreats, and what reward he will receive if he returns (to the battlefield), so he returns (to the battlefield) until his blood is shed. Then Allah Almighty says to His angels: Look at My servant, he returned hoping for what is with Me and fearing what is with Me, until his blood was shed.”
