أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الأَيْلِيِّ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ فِي جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ فَصَلَّى فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَصَلَّى النَّاسُ ، فَأَصْبَحَ النَّاسُ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ بِذَلِكَ ، فَكَثُرَ النَّاسُ ، فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمُ اللَّيْلَةَ الثَّانِيَةَ فَصَلَّى ، فَصَلَّوْا بِصَلاتِهِ ، فَأَصْبَحُوا يَتَحَدَّثُونَ بِذَلِكَ حَتَّى كَثُرَ النَّاسُ ، فَخَرَجَ مِنَ اللَّيْلَةِ الثَّالِثَةِ ، فَصَلَّى فَصَلَّوْا بِصَلاتِهِ ، فَأَصْبَحَ النَّاسُ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ بِذَلِكَ ، فَكَثُرَ النَّاسُ حَتَّى عَجَزَ الْمَسْجِدُ عَنْ أَهْلِهِ ، فَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْهِمْ ، فَطَفِقَ النَّاسُ يَقُولُونَ : الصَّلاةَ ، فَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْهِمْ حَتَّى خَرَجَ لِصَلاةِ الْفَجْرِ ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلاةَ الْفَجْرِ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَتَشَهَّدَ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " أَمَّا بَعْدُ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَخْفَ عَلَيَّ شَأْنُكُمُ اللَّيْلَةَ ، وَلَكِنِّي خَشِيتُ أَنْ تُفْرَضَ عَلَيْكُمْ صَلاةُ اللَّيْلِ ، فَتَعْجِزُوا عَنْ ذَلِكَ " ، وَكَانَ يُرَغِّبُهُمْ فِي قِيَامِ رَمَضَانَ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَأْمُرَهُمْ بِعَزِيمَةٍ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا ، غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ " ، قَالَ : فَتُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ، ثُمَّ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ فِي خِلافَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَصَدْرٍ مِنْ خِلافَةِ عُمَرَ ، حَتَّى جَمَعَهُمْ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ عَلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، فَقَامَ بِهِمْ فِي رَمَضَانَ ، وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ أَوَّلَ اجْتِمَاعِ النَّاسِ عَلَى قَارِئٍ وَاحِدٍ فِي رَمَضَانَ .
Urwah bin Zubair narrates: Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed him: Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went out at night. He prayed in the mosque and people also prayed (following him). The next day, people talked about this, so (the second night) the number of people increased. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) also went to them the second night. He prayed, and the people followed his prayer. The next day, people talked about this, so the number of people increased. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went out the third night as well. He prayed, and the people followed his prayer. The next day, people talked about this, so the number of people increased to the extent that the mosque became too small for them. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not go out to them. The people kept saying: (Please come out for) prayer, but the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not go out to them. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them for the Fajr prayer, and when he had finished the Fajr prayer, he turned to the people and recited the testimony of faith, and then said: "As for what follows! Your condition last night was not hidden from me, but I feared that the night prayer would be made obligatory upon you and you would not be able to perform it." (Lady Aisha narrates) The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to encourage people to perform voluntary prayers in Ramadan. He did not command them with firmness. He used to say: "Whoever stands (in prayer) in the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr) with faith and seeking reward, Allah will forgive his past sins." The narrator states: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, this matter remained as it was. During the caliphate of Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and in the early period of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), the matter remained the same until Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered the people behind Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), and he used to lead them in Tarawih in Ramadan. This was the first gathering of people behind a reciter in Ramadan.
