Urwah narrates: Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) told me this: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to offer eleven rak‘ahs from after the ‘Isha prayer until the appearance of true dawn. He would say salam after every two rak‘ahs. He would perform one rak‘ah as witr. During his prostration, he would remain for as long as it takes a person to recite fifty (50) verses. When the mu’adhdhin finished giving the adhan for Fajr, he would get up and offer two rak‘ahs, then he would lie down on his right side until the mu’adhdhin came to call him.
