Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in eight rak‘ahs during the month of Ramadan, then he performed witr. When the next night came, we gathered in the mosque, hoping that he would come to us. We remained in that state until morning came. Then we went to him and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon you)! We had gathered in the mosque, hoping that you would lead us in prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I feared (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words:) I disliked that witr would be made obligatory upon you.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The wording of these two narrations is different from each other, and their meanings are also different from each other, as these occurred in two different Ramadans in two different circumstances. It is not the case that the incident happened in the same month and in the same situation.
