Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to perform prayer behind the Prophet, then he would return to his people and lead them in prayer. The narrator states: Once, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed the Isha prayer late. Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed behind him, then returned to us and stepped forward to lead us in prayer. He began reciting Surah Al-Baqarah. When one of those present saw this situation, he stepped back, performed the prayer alone, and left. We asked that person, "O so-and-so, what is the reason? Have you become a hypocrite?" He replied, "I have not become a hypocrite. I will definitely go to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and inform him about this." Then he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Mu'adh prays behind you, then returns and leads us in prayer. Last night, you performed the Isha prayer late. He prayed with you, then returned to us and stood forward, and began reciting Surah Al-Baqarah. When I saw this situation, I stepped back and performed the prayer alone. O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We are people who work; we do our own labor (it is difficult for us to pray such a long prayer)." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Mu'adh! Do you want to put people to trial? You should recite such-and-such and such-and-such Surahs." The narrator named Amr states: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had ordered him to recite short Surahs, but I do not remember their names. The narrator named Sufyan states: We said to the narrator Amr bin Dinar: Abu Zubair narrated this hadith to those people, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), "You should recite Surah At-Tariq, Surah Al-Buruj, Surah Ash-Shams." So Amr said: The words would be similar to this.
