المقدمةIntroduction
باب الاعتصام بالسنة وما يتعلق بها نقلا وأمرا وزجرا - ذكر البيان بأن قوله صلى الله عليه وسلم فما أمرتكم بشيء فأتوا منه ما استطعتم-Chapter: Holding fast to the Sunnah – Clarification that the Prophet’s statement "do what you can" refers to religious obligations.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الرُّومِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو النَّجَاشِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي رَافِعُ بْنُ خَدِيجٍ ، قَالَ : قَدْمَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُؤَبِّرُونَ النَّخْلَ ، يَقُول : يُلَقِّحُونَ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : " مَا تَصْنَعُونَ ؟ " ، فَقَالُوا : شَيْئًا كَانُوا يَصْنَعُونَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " لَوْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا كَانَ خَيْرًا " ، فَتَرَكُوهَا فَنَفَضَتْ ، أَوْ نَقَصَتْ ، فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ ، حَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ أَمْرِ دِينِكُمْ ، فَخُذُوا بِهِ ، وَحَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ دُنْيَاكُمْ ، فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ " قَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ : هَذَا أَوْ نَحْوَهُ أَبُو النَّجَاشِيِّ مَوْلَى رَافِعٍ ، اسْمُهُ عَطَاءُ بْنُ صُهِيَبٍ : قَالَهُ الشَّيْخُ .
Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:
When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, the people used to graft date palms. The people called it grafting. The narrator states: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired, "What are you doing?" The people replied, "This is a method that those before us used to practice." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If you do not do this, it would be better." So the people abandoned it, and the yield decreased. The people mentioned this to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I am a human being. When I state something to you regarding religious matters, then accept it, and when I state something to you regarding worldly matters, then I am a human being."
Ikrimah says: These are the words or words similar to these. Abu Najashi (the narrator) is the freed slave of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him), and his name is 'Ata bin Suhaib. This has been stated by the Shaykh.
