Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked to keep a stick. He would hold it in his blessed hand. One day he entered the mosque, and there was a stick in his blessed hand. With it, he scraped something. The narrator means that he scraped off phlegm that was stuck in the direction of the qiblah in the mosque, and he forbade a person from spitting in front of himself or to his right side. He said: One should spit to the left or under his left foot, and if the spit comes out forcefully, then he should spit it into his garment and then do like this. Sufyan demonstrated by rubbing the edge of his sleeve with his fingers as an indication.
