‘Ubadah bin Walid narrates: We went to the service of Sayyiduna Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) in his mosque. At that time, he was performing prayer wrapped in a single cloth as an ishtimal. I jumped over people’s necks and sat down between him and the qiblah. I said: May Allah have mercy on you. You are performing prayer in a single cloth while your large sheet is lying beside you. He struck my chest with his hand and said: I wanted a foolish person like you to come to me and see what I am doing, and then act accordingly. Once, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us in this mosque. In his blessed hand was a stick. He saw phlegm stuck in the direction of the qiblah of the mosque, so he went towards it and scraped it off with the stick. Then he turned towards us and said: Which one of you would like Allah to turn away from him? The narrator says: We became anxious. Then he said: Which one of you would like Allah to turn away from him? We said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! None of us wants that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you stands to pray, Allah is in front of him, so he should not spit in front of himself nor to his right side. He should spit to his left side under his left foot, and if phlegm comes quickly, he should do so in his garment like this, and he rubbed it in. You people give me some perfume. So a young man from that tribe quickly went to his house and brought some perfume in his palms. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and placed it on the tip of the stick and rubbed it over the mark of the phlegm. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: From here, people started keeping perfume in mosques.
