Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Rabee’ Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Sayyiduna ‘Itbaan bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), belonged to the Ansar and had the honor of participating in the Battle of Badr. Once, he presented himself before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: O Messenger of Allah! My eyesight has become weak. I lead the people of my neighborhood in prayer. When it rains, water flows between me and those people in the lower part (of the area), so I cannot reach their mosque to lead them in prayer. Therefore, O Messenger of Allah! I wish that you would come (to my house) and offer prayer at some place in my house, so that I may make that place my prayer area. The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I will do so soon. Sayyiduna ‘Itbaan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The next day, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) came after the sun had risen. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sought permission to enter. I granted you permission. After entering the house, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not sit down first. He said: Where in your house do you like that I should offer prayer? The narrator says: I pointed to a corner of the house, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood there and said the takbeer. We stood behind you. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led us in two rak’ahs of prayer and then made salaam. The narrator says: We detained you to eat khazeerah (a special type of food) which we had prepared for you. The narrator says: Some people from the neighborhood also gathered around the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), until several people gathered in the house. One of them said: Where is Malik bin Dukhshun? Then another said: He is a hypocrite; he does not love Allah and His Messenger. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to that person: Do not say this about him. Have you not seen that he said: There is no god but Allah? He said this word seeking the pleasure of Allah. The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. We have only noted that his attention and goodwill are for the hypocrites. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah has made the Fire of Hell forbidden for the person who says ‘La ilaha illallah’ seeking the pleasure of Allah.” Ibn Shihab says: I asked Husayn bin Muhammad Ansari about this; he is a man from Banu Salim and among their elders. I asked him about the narration of Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Rabee’ (may Allah be pleased with him), and he confirmed this narration.
