Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) expanded the Prophet’s Mosque, people became heedless of the piece of wood that was present in the direction of the qiblah. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Do you know why that piece of wood was placed there? The people replied: No, we do not. So he informed them: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after the iqamah was called for prayer, would take that piece of wood in his blessed right hand and then, turning to the right side, would say: Straighten and align your rows. Then he would take it in his blessed left hand and, turning to the left side, would say: Straighten your rows.
