Muslim bin Harith narrates from his father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sent us on an expedition. When we reached near the required place, I spurred my horse and went ahead of my companions. At the place of "Raneen," I encountered a tribe. I said: Recite «لا الہ الا اللہ», you will be safe. Those people recited this phrase. My companions reproached me and said: We have been deprived of the spoils of war, and this slipped from our hands. Then we presented ourselves before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). My companions informed him about my action. The Prophet (peace be upon him) called me and expressed approval of my action. He said: "Indeed, Allah the Exalted will record for you a reward equal to every single person among those people." The narrator named Abdur Rahman says: I have forgotten the exact reward. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me: I will have a document written for you, and (in that document) I will instruct the Muslim rulers who come after me to grant you gifts regarding this matter. I will advise you about this, as to who will be the rulers of the Muslims after me. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) had a document written for me, sealed it, and handed it over to me. He said: When you have performed the Maghrib prayer, before speaking to anyone, recite this phrase seven times: "O Allah! Grant me salvation from Hellfire." If you die that night, Allah the Exalted will record for you freedom from Hellfire. And when you have performed the Fajr prayer, before speaking to anyone, recite this phrase seven times: "O Allah! Grant me salvation from Hellfire." If you die that day, Allah the Exalted will record for you freedom from the Fire. The narrator says: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away, I took that document and presented myself before Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) broke the seal, read the letter, then ordered payment to me and sealed it again. Then I went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) during his caliphate; he read it and ordered payment to me, and he also sealed it. Then I took it to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he did the same. The narrator Muslim bin Harith says: Sayyiduna Harith bin Muslim (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him). That document remained with us until Umar bin Abdul Aziz wrote a letter to the governor of our area, instructing him to present me and that document before Umar bin Abdul Aziz. I went to Umar bin Abdul Aziz. He broke the seal, ordered payment to me, and then sealed it again. Then he said: If I had wished, all this could have reached you at your home, but I wanted you to narrate this hadith to me. The narrator says: I narrated this hadith to him.
