أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ نُعَيْمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُجْمِرُ ، أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الأَنْصَارِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ ، ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَنَحْنُ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ ، فَقَالَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ : أَمَرَنَا اللَّهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ ؟ قَالَ : فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " قُولُوا : اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، فِي الْعَالَمِينَ ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ . وَالسَّلامُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us while we were present in the gathering of Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Bashir bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Allah Almighty has commanded us to send blessings upon you, so how should we send blessings upon you? The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent until we wished that he had not asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) this question. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You should say: “O Allah! Send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim among all the worlds; surely, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.” (The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:) The method of greeting (salam) is as you already know.
