Hadith 176

أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ الدَّسْتُوَائِيِّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ سَلامٍ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَجُلٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا الإِيمَانُ ؟ قَالَ : " سَرَّتْكَ حَسَنَاتُكَ ، وَسَاءَتْكَ سَيِّئَاتُكَ ، فَأَنْتَ مُؤْمِنٌ " ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَمَا الإِثْمُ ؟ قَالَ : " حَاكَ فِي قَلْبِكَ شَيْءٌ فَدَعْهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by faith?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When your good deeds please you and your bad deeds displease you, then you are a believer." He asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is sin?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When something pricks your heart, then leave it."
