Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: In the sacred era of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the mosque was built with unbaked bricks, and palm branches were placed on its roof. Its pillars were of palm trees. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not make any addition to it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) expanded it; he rebuilt it with unbaked bricks and branches according to the foundations from the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He made its pillars of wood again. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) made changes to it and expanded it greatly. He had its walls built with decorated stones, its pillars made of decorated stones, and its roof made of teak wood.
