Hadith 1494

Usamah bin Zaid reports: Ibn Shihab informed him of this. Once, Umar bin Abdul Aziz was sitting on the pulpit. He delayed the prayer a little, so Urwah bin Zubair said: Do you not know, that Sayyiduna Jibreel (peace be upon him) informed the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about the times of the prayers? So Umar bin Abdul Aziz said to him: O Urwah! Be mindful of what you are saying. So Urwah said: I heard Basheer bin Abu Mas’ud narrate, he says: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate, he says: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Jibreel descended and informed me about the times of the prayers, so I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him.” The narrator says: He counted on his fingers and mentioned this about the five prayers. (Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:) I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the Zuhr prayer when the sun had declined, and when the heat was intense, sometimes he would delay it. I saw him perform the Asr prayer when the sun was still high and bright, and no yellowness had entered it, and a person, after performing this prayer, could reach Dhul-Hulaifah before the sun set. He would perform the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set, and the Isha prayer when the horizon had become dark. Sometimes he would delay this prayer until, when the people gathered (he would then perform it). He would perform the Fajr prayer in darkness, then later, several times, he performed it in brightness. After that, he continued to perform this prayer in darkness until he passed away. He never performed this prayer in brightness again.
