أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْهَاشِمِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ زُرَارَةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَلْقَمَةَ : هَلْ كَانَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ شَهِدَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، لَيْلَةَ الْجِنِّ ؟ فَقَالَ عَلْقَمَةُ : أَنَا سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، فَقُلْتُ : هَلْ شَهِدَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةَ الْجِنِّ ؟ فَقَالَ : " لا ، كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ ، فَفَقَدْنَاهُ ، فَالْتَمَسْنَاهُ فِي الأَوْدِيَةِ وَالشِّعَابِ ، فَقُلْنَا : اسْتُطِيرَ أَوِ اغْتِيلَ ، قَالَ : فَبِتْنَا بِشَرِّ لَيْلَةٍ بَاتَ بِهَا قَوْمٌ ، فَلَمْا أَصْبَحْنَا إِذَا هُوَ جَاءَ مِنْ قِبَلِ حِرَاءَ ، قَالَ : فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَدْنَاكَ فَطَلَبْنَاكَ ، فَلَمْ نَجِدْكَ ، فَبِتْنَا بِشَرِّ لَيْلَةٍ بَاتَ بِهَا قَوْمٌ ، فَقَالَ : " أَتَانِي دَاعِي الْجِنِّ ، فَذَهَبْتُ مَعَهُ فَقَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنَ " ، قَالَ : فَانْطَلَقَ بِنَا ، فَأَرَانَا نِيرَانَهُمْ ، وَسَأَلُوهُ الزَّادَ ، فَقَالَ : " لَكُمْ كُلُّ عَظْمٍ ذُكِرَ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ ، يَقَعُ فِي أَيْدِيكُمْ أَوْفَرَ مَا يَكُونُ لَحْمًا ، وَكُلُّ بَعْرٍ عَلَفٌ لِدَوَابِّكُمْ " ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَلا تَسْتَنْجُوا بِالْعَظْمِ ، وَلا بِالْبَعْرِ ، فَإِنَّهُ زَادُ إِخْوَانِكُمْ مِنَ الْجِنِّ " .
Imam Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I asked Alqamah, “Was Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night when he met the jinn?” Alqamah replied, “I had asked Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) this question. I asked, ‘On the night when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met the jinn, was any of you with him?’ He replied, ‘No, we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one night. We found him absent. We searched for him in the valleys and lowlands. We thought perhaps he had been secretly or deceitfully martyred.’ The narrator says: ‘That night was as if a people had spent the worst night ever.’ When morning came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came from the direction of the Cave of Hira. The narrator says: ‘We said, O Messenger of Allah! We found you absent. We searched for you but could not find you, so we spent the night as a people would spend the worst night in the worst condition.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘A messenger from the jinn came to me, so I went with him. I recited the Qur’an to them.’ The narrator says: ‘Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took us with him and showed us the traces of their fire. They requested provisions from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: Every bone upon which Allah’s name has been mentioned, when it comes into your hands, it will have more meat on it than before, and every dung will be fodder for your animals.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to us): ‘Do not use bones or dung for istinja (cleaning after relieving oneself), for these are the food of your jinn brothers.’
