Hadith 1383

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: It was said to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): Tell us something about the Battle of Tabuk. So he said: We set out towards Tabuk in extremely hot weather. We camped at a place. We became so thirsty that we felt as if our necks would be cut off (meaning, we would die from the intensity of thirst), until it reached the point that if a person went out in search of water and did not return, we would assume that he had died. A man would slaughter his camel, squeeze its dung and drink it, and place the remaining part on his liver. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Allah has placed goodness in your supplication, so please pray for us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you want this? He replied: Yes. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands. His hands had not yet come down when a cloud gave shade and it started to rain. The people filled everything they had with water. After that, we observed that nowhere ahead of the army had it rained (meaning, the rain had only fallen over the army). (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The people squeezing the water from the camel’s dung and placing it on their liver, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not commanding them to wash off what was on their bodies, is evidence that the dung of animals whose meat is eaten is pure.
