Abdullah bin Abdullah narrates: His father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), informed those people that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked about the water from which animals and beasts also come and drink afterwards. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "When the water reaches two qullahs, nothing makes it impure." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), "Nothing makes water impure," here the words are used in a general sense, but in some situations, it will be acted upon, and the water referred to is that which is abundant and does not carry impurity. The general words used here are specified by another hadith, and that is the statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "When the water reaches two qullahs, nothing makes it impure." And both of these narrations are further specified by the consensus (ijma‘) which is upon the fact that when impurity falls into water and changes its taste, color, or smell, then that water will become impure. There is consensus on this, which specifies the generality of those absolute words that we have mentioned.
