Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an expedition towards the direction of Najd. They brought back a man from the tribe of Banu Hanifah whose name was Thumamah bin Uthal. He was the chief of the people of Yamamah. The people tied him to one of the pillars of the mosque. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him and said: "What is in your heart, O Thumamah?" He replied: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I have goodness with me. If you kill me, you will be killing a man whose blood will be avenged. If you show favor, you will be showing favor to a grateful person. And if you want wealth, then ask, whatever you ask for will be given to you." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) left him in his condition until the next day. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "O Thumamah, what is in your mind?" He replied: "It is what I have already told you: if you show favor, you will show favor to a grateful person, and if you kill, you will kill a man whose blood will be avenged, and if you want wealth, then ask, whatever you ask for will be given to you." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) again left him, then the next day came, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "O Thumamah, what is in your mind?" He replied: "What I have already told you: if you show favor, you will show favor to a grateful person, if you kill, you will kill a man whose blood will be avenged, and if you want wealth, then ask, whatever you want will be given to you." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Release Thumamah." Then he went to a date orchard near the mosque, performed ghusl (ritual bath), then came to the mosque and said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and indeed Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), by Allah! There was no face on the surface of the earth more disliked by me than your face, but now your face is the most beloved of all faces to me. By Allah! There was no religion more disliked by me than your religion, but now your religion is the most beloved of all religions to me. By Allah! There was no city more disliked by me than your city, but now your city is the most beloved of all cities to me. Your horsemen captured me while I was going for Umrah. Now, what is your opinion?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him glad tidings (congratulated him) and instructed him to perform Umrah. When he reached Makkah, someone said to him: "You have become irreligious." He replied: "No, I have accepted Islam with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the Messenger of Allah. By Allah! Not a single grain of wheat will come to you from Thumamah until the Messenger of Allah permits it." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, there is evidence that pious people (Muslims) can trade in the land of the enemy.
