Hadith 1238

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَرُوبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَلَمْةُ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ : أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ ثُمَامَةَ الْحَنَفِي أُسِرَ ، فَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعُودُ إِلَيْهِ ، فِيقُولُ : " وَمَا عِنْدَكَ يَا ثُمَامَةُ ؟ " فِيقُولُ : إِنْ تَقْتُلْ تَقْتُلْ ذَا دَمٍ ، وَإِنْ تَمُنَّ تَمُنَّ عَلَى شَاكِرٍ ، وَإِنْ تُرِدِ الْمَالَ تُعْطَ مَا شِئْتَ ، قَالَ : فَكَانَ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُحِبُّونَ الْفِدَاءَ ، وَيَقُولُونَ : مَا نَصْنَعُ بِقَتْلِ هَذَا ، فَمَرَّ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا فَأَسْلَمْ ، فَبَعَثَ بِهِ إِلَى حَائِطِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ، فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ ، فَاغْتَسَلَ وَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ " ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَقَدْ حَسُنَ إِسْلامُ صَاحِبِكُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that Thumamah al-Hanafi was captured. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, came to meet him and asked: “O Thumamah! What is in your mind?” He replied: “If you kill me, then you will be killing a person who has shed blood, and if you show kindness, you will be showing kindness to a grateful person, and if you want wealth, then whatever you desire will be given to you.” The narrator states: The companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, preferred the option of taking ransom. They said: “What will we gain by killing him?” Then one day, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by him and he accepted Islam. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent him to the garden of Abu Talhah and instructed that he should perform ghusl (ritual bath). He performed ghusl and offered two rak‘ahs of prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The Islam of your companion is excellent.”
