Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "The example of the person who is given the Qur'an and faith is like that of a pear, whose taste is good and whose fragrance is also good. And the example of the person who is given neither the Qur'an nor faith is like the colocynth plant, whose taste is bitter and which has no fragrance." The example of the person who is given faith but not (knowledge of) the Qur'an is like that of a date, whose taste is good but which has no fragrance. And the example of the person who is given (knowledge of) the Qur'an but not faith is like the sweet basil plant, whose taste is bitter but whose fragrance is good.
