Hadith 115

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, came out while we were present at the Suffah. He said: "Which one of you would like to go to Bathan or Aqeeq and bring back two camels with high humps and shining color every day, acquiring them without committing any sin or severing ties of kinship?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Each one of us would like that." So the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If a person goes to the mosque and learns two verses from the Book of Allah, it is better for him than two camels, and learning three (verses) is better than three camels, and learning four (verses) is better than as many camels as their number." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says: There is a hidden (i.e., omitted) word in this narration, and that is: 'if he gives them in charity.' So the meaning of the statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, will be: A person learning two verses from the Book of Allah is better for him than giving two or three camels in charity. The reason is: Learning two verses from the Book of Allah is more virtuous than giving two or three camels or as many camels as their number in charity, because it is impossible that the reward for learning two verses from the Book of Allah should be likened to the acquisition of worldly goods. Therefore, the explanation I have given is correct, as I have mentioned.)
